Chapter Sixteen

When I returned to the Toyota, Tuzren stared at me in amazement. “The trolls let you live?”

“Oh ye of little faith,” I replied. “They aren’t bad for trolls, but someone needs to give them some shampoo and conditioner for the rats’ nest they have. And a breath mint.”

“You couldn’t pay anyone to do it,” the demon pointed out.

“True.” I climbed back into the Toyota and Tuzren took the shotgun seat. As I started it, I told him about the conversation that transpired.

“An Elf that smells like a car? That’s freaky.” Tuzren agreed with my assessment. “But why do you care? The department put you on leave.”

I put the Toyota in gear and drove toward the exit back to the highway. “Yeah, but it makes no sense. Just like someone trying to beat the crap out of me and tail me—why do that to me? Yeah, I’m a cop, but I don’t think I’ve done anything to warrant someone doing that. I wonder if it’s related.”

“How so?” Tuzren considered my words.

“Well I didn’t have this problem before my fight with the troll.”

“You think the trolls put that Orc up to attacking you?”

“Don’t think so. If they did, they would have pounded me flat when I visited them.”

“Good point. Maybe the stinky Elf got wind of you taking down the troll and didn’t like what you did.”

“Possible.” I nodded as we turned onto the highway and headed back towards Idledale. “But why? Elves and trolls don’t mix.”

Tuzren shrugged. “Depends on the type of Elf, I guess.”

We arrived at my mom’s house around 8:30 pm. Sabine was already home and greeted us as I pulled the Toyota into the driveway.

“I have some pizza keeping warm in the oven,” she said. “Why don’t you stay here tonight and you can go back to wherever it is you go in the morning?”

I couldn’t think of a good reason why not to. The job at the University didn’t start until ten. Tuz poked his head out of the car window. “Somebody say pizza?”

Sabine’s eyes narrowed. “Is that your demon?”

Tuzren looked askance. “Who’s the broad?”

Sabine scowled. Before Tuzren could duck back inside, she waved her hand and plucked the demon by the back of his dirty sweatshirt and levitated him towards her. “Hey! What are you doing? Put me down!” The little demon beat his wings fiercely, but to no avail.

“Tuz, meet my mom, Sabine. Sabine, this is Tuz.” I got out of the truck.

“Where’s my fly swatter?” Sabine turned to me as Tuz cursed and struggled against her magic.

“Oh Mom, come on. Give the little guy a break, huh?” I said, secretly amused.

Sabine chuckled. “Okay, I see what you have. He’s mostly harmless, so I guess he’s okay to enter.”

“Let go! Come on!” Tuzren shouted.

Sabine waved her hand and he dropped like a rock onto his butt. The demon would have a sore backside in the morning. “Jeesh,” Tuzren grumbled. “Why does everyone drop me on my ass?” He rubbed his posterior.

“Maybe because you’re a pain in the ass?” I quipped.
